Our client, a world renowned supplier to the automotive industry, is seeking a Director Level Attorney.  Under the direction of VP & General Counsel-Commercial Transactions, this role serves as director commercial transactions and related matters for the Americas.

Drive delivery of pro-active, efficient and effective legal services and support global projects to create value, maximize services and reduce risk and legal costs.  Ensure excellence in legal services relating to all areas but in particular regarding commercial transactions, mergers and acquisitions, and purchasing and supply chain dispute management and resolution. Work closely with compliance specialists regarding anti-competition, anti-corruption and other regulatory issues.

Works closely with the supervisor, business leaders and other legal department leaders to ensure that team organization and department collaboration drive efficient and effective global support and capabilities that realize the vision of Client and the Legal Department.

LOCATION: Michigan

Primary Duties:

  1. Ensures excellence in the delivery of legal services to the Client business across all countries within the Americas region.
  2. Supervises, develops and manages lawyers, paralegals and other team members. Actively serves as a leader, positive role model and teacher regarding Client’s mission, vision and values, legal counseling, business skills, and Client’s Leader Expectation Model behaviors.
  3. Responsible for implementing, driving and reporting results and efficiency metrics including budget and cost management.
  4. Works closely with the VP & General Counsel – Commercial Transactions and legal, compliance, security and risk management leaders in developing and implementing the Legal Department operational excellence objectives and driving continuous improvement.
  5. Addresses regional issues and practices in a manner that mitigates risks and drives global best practices and strategic direction.
  6. Ensures use of legal tools and applications to drive continuous improvement in the delivery of cost-effective, high quality legal services and support.
  7. Develops regional organizational structures, best business practices, policies and processes (including training and communication) to optimize resource allocation based on company and business needs, efficiency and risk reduction including external providers (outside counsel, legal process outsourcers and other vendors).
  8. Develops and strengthens relationships with business partners to ensure understanding of the strategic direction of business groups regionally and globally necessary for the provision of legal services.
  9. Ensures that all significant legal matters are addressed effectively and efficiently.
  10. Identifies and sponsors enterprise-wide initiatives that advance Client’s legal function.


Job Specifications:

  • Qualified to practice law in US.
  • Minimum of 12 years (preferably minimum of 15 years) of relevant experience within a multi-national legal function, preferably with experience at a law firm.
  • Automotive industry experience.
  • Previous experience successfully counseling senior business leaders throughout Americas.
  • Previous experience managing teams, outside counsel, and legal spend and budget.
  • Ability to build relationships and positively influence outcomes.
  • Experience successfully driving operational excellence, process improvements, resource efficiencies and change management in provision of legal services.
  • Ability to make solid judgment calls under pressure.
  • Varied exposure to substantive legal practice areas typically encountered by large companies, in particular in areas of commercial transactions, litigation and regulatory counseling.
  • Excellent communication, strong team management and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with others.
  • Ability to translate strategic goals and objectives into strategies and actioned priorities.
  • Ability to find creative solutions to meet legal requirements and business needs. \
  • Ability to multitask, handle many conflicting priorities and move forward on projects notwithstanding constant interruptions.
